1. Disk Cleanup
Microsoft Windows 10 has a tool called Disk Cleanup or CleanMaXX that helps remove unnecessary files in Windows and free up space on your hard disk. To use it, enter the words ‘Disk Cleanup’ in the start search box, click the result that appears, pick the drive containing the files to be deleted, and tick the files that should be removed.
2. Uninstall unnecessary programs
Depending on how long you have had this PC, you may have installed applications that you no longer need. Uninstalling these programs involves clicking on the Start button, then clicking Settings, Apps, and the Apps & feature on the Settings, selecting the program you wish to uninstall, and clicking on the Uninstall button.
3. Remove startup programs
When your PC starts, too many programs launching can slow it down. To uninstall or turn off these programs, users must begin typing ‘msconfig’ into the search bar, and the System Configuration tool will appear. Click on Startup, deselect any application you do not wish to run as soon as Windows loads, then click on “OK.”
4. Disable visual effects
Windows 10 comes with many eye candy that are a resource hog for the system. To disable them, use the search bar, type “Performance,” choose “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows,” and choose “Adjust for best performance.”
5. Check for updates
Ensure your PC is up to date with the latest security patch, updated drivers, and software. To update Windows XP, open the Run dialog box, enter the following command step: Windows Update (or control update), and press Enter.
6. Scan for malware
Virus and other malicious software can slow down your PC and may engender other problems. Below are the steps to quickly scan for malware:
- Start downloading a folder.
- Right-click on it and select settings.
- After clicking Start, click on Date and Security, Window Security, Virus, and Threat Protection, and then click on a Quick Scan.
7. Disable unused services
When the user does not actively interact, many services present in Windows 10 are running as background processes. To turn these services off, type in the words ‘services. Music in the start search bar, right-click and select services, and double–click on the desired service. Change the startup type to “Disabled,” then select “Apply.”
8. Defragment your hard drive
Eventually, your files will be fragmented and strewn all over your hard drive, making your PC slow. To defragment your hard drive, enter the word ‘Defragment’ in the Search Box, choose ‘Defragment and Optimize Drives,’ select the drive you want, and click on ‘Optimize.’
9. Increase virtual memory
The Windows 10 operating system controls virtual memory but allows you to configure the parameters to get the best results. To do this, in the Search Windows, type in “Performance”, select “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows,” and finally choose the “Advanced” tab. Next to “Virtual Memory’ click on ‘Change’ then unselect ‘Automatically manage paging file size for all drives’ then select the drive that has the paging file you wish to change, and then select ‘Custom size’ and set a larger initial and maximum size.
10. Upgrade hardware
If you are still experiencing a slow PC, then it is time to upgrade your hardware parts or visit your hardware store. Some simple internal tweaks that would make your PC faster include increasing the RAM, replacing the existing hard drive with an SSD, and replacing an existing graphics card.
